Diamond History

Diamonds have a long history as beautiful objects of desire. In the 1st century AD, the Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder stated: “Diamond is the most valuable, not only of precious stones, but of all things in this world.”

The myth of Valleys of diamonds that were guarded by giant snakes, an unexplored lands full of diamonds to discover, all of us ‘diamond lovers’ have listened to similar stories throughout our lives because we all wish to find them and become entrance in their beauty.

From what we learned, diamonds were found quite late which date back some 3,000 years, when the Indians used them to refract light. Very soon, the proud culture began using them for decorative and talisman reasons, as when warriors, conquerors, kings and knights used them in battle for good luck. This was during the Early History.

As the Dark Ages arrived, other civilizations began using them although some of them gave them another particular use: As a Medicine. During these year St Hildegarde wrote that if you held a diamond in the hand while making the sign of the cross, it would heal all your wounds and perhaps some illnesses. Some people even thought they were good for curing sickness thus ingesting it after swallowing it. This is so true that most historians know that Pope Clement unsuccessfully tried this last method in order to help his recovery, it did not work.

The Middle Ages had to come for people to understand the real value of the diamonds: They were worth a lot of money. Given that many people started hearing about their worth, even the mine owners perpetuated myths to make everybody believe that diamonds were poisonous. This was very intelligently done to prevent mineworkers from swallowing copious amounts of diamonds to smuggle them out of the mines !

This is also the time in which inevitably diamonds got famous and everybody was in search of unexplored lands that might be full of new diamonds. Such thing happened in India again, so they found new stones: The Koh-I-Noor and the Blue Hope… It is nos for nothing that India is still the best diamond polishing industry in the world.

After this the demand of diamonds increased enormously. Borneo and Brazil found more diamonds in their lands, but these were not sufficient to meet the amazing new demand. The mid nineteenth century had to come for people to discover the land of the Orange River in South Africa had millions of new diamonds, enough to satiate the globe’s increasing appetite for diamonds.

Some of you might be asking yourselves … And what about Australia? You are right, it was also on the 19th century when Australia presented itself as the land of diamonds, but this did not happen until the late 1970′s.

Geologists found the Argyle pipe in North-West Australia on October 1979: It was and still is the richest diamond deposit on Earth. Since then, Argyle has become the world’s largest volume producer of diamonds and it produces over 1/3 of the world’s diamonds every single year.
